Salman Khan continues to lead the pack of highest tax payers in the film industry, while Karan Johar, Alia Bhatt and comedian Kapil Sharma have broken into the top 10 list for this year. Reports indicate that Salman has paid an advance tax amounting to Rs44.5 crore for 2016-17, which is Rs12 crore more than his Rs32 crore mark last year.

An advance tax is paid by individuals if the tax liability on the estimated income, after the exclusion of TDS (Tax Deducted at Source), exceeds Rs10,000 in the fiscal year.

While Salman enjoys the stint at the top, he is followed closely by another blockbuster star, Akshay Kumar. The Khiladi actor paid up Rs29.5 crore in advance tax, a little less than the Rs30 crore mark last year. Hrithik Roshan takes the third spot with Rs25.5 crore. Surprisingly, Shah Rukh Khan's low box office score this year seems to have knocked him off the top 10 list. Amitabh Bachchan is another big name from the previous list that is missing.

Although they might not want to be on a tax payers' list, Karan Johar, Alia Bhatt and comedian Kapil Sharma are the latest entrants into this high profile list. Comedian Sharma's meteoric rise has seen him edge past Ranbir Kapoor, forcing him to pay up Rs23.9 crore in advance tax. This is an exponential rise to the Rs7 crore he paid last year.

Johar has had to pay an advance tax of Rs11.9 crore, up from the Rs9 crore in the last fiscal year, putting him on 7th spot behind Aamir Khan. Deepika Padukone continues to lead the women on the list by paying Rs10.25 crore, but it is Alia Bhatt's presence that is the surprise entry.

The Udta Punjab actress has filed for an advance tax return amounting to Rs4.33 crore, an increase from the Rs2.9 crore last year.

Among the others, Ranbir has submitted Rs16.5 crore, a drop from his last year taxes of Rs22.3 crore. Even Kareena Kapoor Khan has lowered her bar with Rs3.9 crore this year.

Though membership to this group might come at a heavy cost, at least they are doing their duty.
