Pannu also explained that it is not a prequel, but a spin-off of the Akshay Kumar-starrer Baby.

Taapsee Pannu has said that she couldn’t relate to her character in her upcoming film, Naam Shabana. She has good reason, too.
While speaking to the media today, she said, “There is no relatability between Shabana and Taapsee. I can’t relate with this character. It was also mentally tough for me to accept this character. I genuinely couldn’t understand how a girl can stay or react like Shabana does. So, it was more challenging mentally than physically to play this character.”
Usually, it is seen that if an actor can relate to the character he or she is playing, it tends to affect the portrayal positively.
It has been reported time and again that Naam Shabana is a prequel to Baby (2015). But Pannu explained that it is not a prequel but a spin-off of the Akshay Kumar-starrer. "A spin-off has not been done here (in Bollywood), so the audience might not know. When we pick one character from an ensemble cast, like Baby, and make a film on his or her back story, it is called a spin-off,” she explained.
She continued, “If it was a prequel, the same set of characters would have appeared. Here (Naam Shabana) we have told a background story of only one character.”
Naam Shabana is to be released on 31 March.
