Vir Das' Netflix special — Abroad Understanding is currently one of the most-talked about and successful shows on the entertainment streaming platform. This has led to a spike in the popularity of the stand-up comedian. The Go Goa Gone actor now finds himself on the coveted list of Variety magazine's '10 Comedians to Watch' for 2017.

The American magazine releases the list annually since 2000, and Das becomes the first Indian to be featured on the list, alongside comedians like Hasan Minhaj and Tiffany Haddish.

The honorees will be recognised in the 19 July issue of Variety and at the Just for Laughs Comedy Festival in Montreal at a cocktail party on 27 July, followed by a panel and showcase on 28 July.

Variety describes Das as "the star of Bollywood hits like Badmaash Company, Das recently released the Netflix special Abroad Understanding, shot at a stadium in India and a club in New York."

The comics are chosen by a group of Variety editors, reporters, and critics after extensive discussions with the comedy community, including those that scout, book, represent, produce, and cast comics on a daily basis. Along the years, other honorees have included Amy Schumer, Kumail Nanjiani, and Rebel Wilson.

Apart from his show Abroad Understanding, Das is currently in the middle of his world tour. Recently, the stand-up comedian also performed a sketch on Conan O'Brien's show.

Das has also featured in Hindi films over the years, including Shivaay (2016), Delhi Belly (2011) and Go Goa Gone (2013).
