A new poster of the Marathi film Halal was released recently. The poster also announced that the film will be released on 29 September.

The film is directed by National award-winning filmmaker Shivaji Lotan Patil and stars Chinmay Mandlekar, Priyadarshan Jadhav and Pritam Kagne.

The powerful poster features an actress in a burkha and niqab, with only her eyes visible. She forms the backdrop. In the foreground is Mandlekar, bowing his head in prayer. His full face is not visible. Mandlekar has played a Muslim character before in Avadhoot Gupte’s Morya (2011), which was based on the degradation of the Ganesh festival.

Halal has already won a number of awards. The film won six awards at the 53rd Maharashtra state film awards — Best Film on Social Issues, Best Debut Film Production, Best Social Issue Director, Best Writer, Best Lyricist and Best Background Music. It has also won two Sanskruti Kala Darpan awards, five Sahyadri Cine awards and two Zee Gaurav awards.

The film was screened at Cannes this year.

An earlier poster of the film had featured the words, ‘Halal is based on talak [divorce].’ So it seems the film addresses the much talked about issue of triple talaaq in Muslim marriages.

Shivaji Lotan Patil was adjudged Best Director at the 60th National film awards for Dhag (Cloud).
