Reacting to the growing criticism of his character's stalking in Shree Narayan Singh's upcoming Toilet: Ek Prem Katha, actor Akshay Kumar said, "It is just a character, and that’s it. In films there are many things that are shown, here my character, Keshav, was trying to take a photo of Bhumi’s character, Jaya. This is wrong, but I can’t show all the good things only, right?”

The actor came under severe criticism on the internet after the song, 'Hans Mat Pagli', from the film was released. In the song, Akshay's character is shown following Bhumi Pednekar's Jaya through the streets of the town, even taking photographs and videos without her knowledge.

In view of the recent reports of stalking and molestation of women, this portrayal of Akshay's character earned outrage across the board. However, the portrayal was defended by the star, and his co-stars at the press conference for the film held on Thursday.

Co-star Anupam Kher said, "To show good in the character, sometime you have to show the bad too, the transformation is very important. The character becomes completely different by the end of the film."

At the event, Akshay Kumar also revealed that while the film revolves around the construction of the toilet, it is essentially a love story. He said, "This film is primarily a love story. The toilet construction just forms the backdrop. The film is about Keshav and Jaya. It is based on a true story."

The film's premise, built around the lack of toilet facilities for women, has earned it the support of the government of India's Swacch Bharat Abhiyaan as well. Prime minister Narendra Modi had praised the film and called it a 'commendable' effort to promote cleanliness.

Toilet: Ek Prem Katha is directed by Shree Narayan Singh, and stars Akshay Kumar, Bhumi Pednekar, Divyendu Sharma, and Anupam Kher. The film is set to be released on 11 August.
