Filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani and actor Ranbir Kapoor have got going with the Sanjay Dutt biopic, with shooting beginning on 14 January. The biopic has evoked great interest amongst Sanjay Dutt fans as well as cineastes because of the controversial life the star has led.

Hirani had earlier told the Mumbai Mirror tabloid that his as yet untitled film will showcase the relationship between Sanjay and his father, the late actor-turned-parliamentarian Sunil Dutt.

Now Kapoor has shared his thoughts about the film. The actor said this will not be a propaganda film.

Ranbir Kapoor was quoted by the DNA newspaper as saying, “The biopic that Rajkumar Hirani is making will teach you something. It will talk about human flaws, the emotional father-son story, his relationship with his best friend, with the women in his life. It’s emotional, it’s funny, it’s sad, it’s bitter-sweet.

"The youth have a lot to learn from his mistakes. Sanjay has lived his life. He owned up to his mistakes, he has paid the price for it. He has been through much… his mother [the late 1950s star Nargis Dutt] passing away just before the première of his first film, drug abuse, being labelled a terrorist, his failed marriages, the grind of punishment... We are not trying to project Sanjay Dutt in any way, it’s not a propaganda film."

While Kapoor plays Sanjay Dutt, Paresh Rawal is playing Sunil Dutt. Other actors in the film include Anushka Sharma and Sonam Kapoor.
