Naam Shabana trailer: Baby girl Taapsee Pannu set for a Bond turn

Neeraj Pandey-produced Naam Shabana promises to be India’s first action-packed spy thriller with a female protagonist in the lead; it has Akshay Kumar too.

Hindi cinema has seen female spies before, Katrina Kaif in Ek Tha Tiger (2012) and Kareena Kapoor Khan in Agent Vinod (2012) being prime examples, but none has traded punches like GenNext actress Taapsee Pannu.

The young Sikh first displayed her martial arts skills in the Akshay Kumar-starrer Baby (2015), directed by Neeraj Pandey. Now, Pandey is trying to create a franchise of sorts by producing a film on Pannu’s character, Shabana, directed by unheralded filmmaker Shivam Nair.

The official trailer of Naam Shabana was unveiled today. The trailer suggests that Baby star Akshay Kumar may have more than just a cameo in the film. That, however, takes nothing away from Naam Shabana or Pannu.

The Pink (2016) actress was appreciated for her deadpan expressions and intense action in Baby. With Naam Shabana, she appears set for a James Bond makeover. The trailer, which is more than two minutes long, is filled with drama and action moves reminiscent of spy thrillers like the James Bond and Jason Bourne series.

Nair, though, appears to have paid attention to more than just slam-bang action. The trailer hooks you with a potentially intense, tragic story that leads to Pannu’s character being called Shabana. The tears and cry for help in sequence indicate that the young woman was, perhaps, the victim of a heinous crime. Like in Baby, Shabana is a woman of few words, and this is evident in the trailer.

Manoj Bajpayee is an addition to the spy team which is out to nail a criminal called Tony who has taken shelter abroad. Returning to the fold are veterans Anupam Kher and Danny Denzongpa.

Naam Shabana is set to be released on 31 March 2017. Watch the action-packed trailer:
