Actress Kangana Ranaut has found her way into the Padmavati row by refusing to sign the 'Deepika Bachao' petition. Initiated by veteran actress Shabana Azmi, the petition asks for Padukone's safety and protection amid death threats from various factions.
The petition, to be sent to prime minister Narendra Modi, has been signed by actresses from the Hindi film industry, including Jaya Bachchan, Hema Malini, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Alia Bhatt, Vidya Balan, Priyanka Chopra, Anushka Sharma and Sonakshi Sinha.
A source told the news website, The Quint, “Kangana refused pointblank. She said an outright no to signing the Deepika Bachao petition, much to Shabana’s shock and annoyance.”
Azmi has been very vocal about her concerns over the death threats issued to the Padmavati team, including director Sanjay Leela Bhansali and actress Padukone, and the government’s inability to take action against those making the threats.
The fringe right wing group Rajput Karni Sena members and Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) media coordinator from Haryana, Suraj Pal Amu, had openly offered rewards of Rs5 crore and Rs10 crore, respectively, to anyone who beheaded Padukone and Padmavati director Sanjay Leela Bhansali. According to them, the film distorts historical facts about the Rajput queen.
Ranaut is known to have had disagreements with Padukone in the past. While receiving an award for her performance in Happy New Year (2014), the latter had parised the former for character in Queen (2014). Ranaut, however, was irked and said she would have appreciated if Padukone had praised her act in private rather than in public. Ranaut, in various interviews, has stated that she does not share a cordial relationship with Padukone.
