Early in December, it was reported that veteran actor Gulshan Grover is set to produce a film based on Afshan Ashiq, the young female football player from Kashmir. The buzz now is that Grover has roped in Athiya Shetty to play the Kashmiri girl, as reported by the website Filmfare.com.

Ashiq courted controversy in November when she was pictured (with face covered) as a stone-pelter during a violent protest in the valley. She is credited with having inspired girls to play football in Kashmir and also helped to build a local team.

The chief minister of Jammu & Kashmir, Mehbooba Mufti, noticed Ashiq's passion and the state government helped her realize her dreams. The young footballer had also written to Union home minister Rajnath Singh requesting the government to open a sports institute in the troubled state.

Today, Ashiq is said to be the captain and goalkeeper of the state's women’s team.

Shetty has had a forgetful debut in the Salman Khan-produced Hero (2015). Her second film Mubarakan (2017), too, failed at the box office.
