The editorial board of Variety, after months of extensive research, has named 12 Indians in the list of 500 most influential business leaders who shape the global $2 trillion entertainment industry. Aristes Salman Khan, Priyanka Chopra, filmmakers Karan Johar, Aditya Chopra and producers Ekta Kapoor and Siddharth Roy Kapur have been included.
Other Indians in the list are Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani, Reliance Group Anil Ambani, Zee Entertainment CEO Punit Goenka, Eros International executive chairman Kishore Lulla, Star India CEO/chairman Uday Shankar and Essel Group founder and chairman Subhash Chandra.
The global list has 362 influencers from the United States, 28 from the United Kingdom, 20 from China, 16 from France, 15 from Germany, 8 from Italy, 6 from Spain and 4 from Mexico. India joins in at 12.
Salman Khan and Priyanka Chopra are the only two actors from India to make it to the list. Khan is also a producer with his banner, Salman Khan Productions. He will be next co-producing Kesari with Dharma Productions and Karan Johar. The film, starring Akshay Kumar, is period drama based on the Battle of Saragarhi.
Variety notes that Salman, along with Aamir and Shah Rukh, has been ruling the Hindi box office scene for decades. However, the magazine writes, "unlike his contemporary Khans whose fan bases are staid by comparison, every Salman release generates mass hysteria across India, a frenzy surpassed only by the fans of South Indian superstar Rajinikanth".
Meanwhile, Chopra also has her own production company, Purple Pebble Pictures, established in 2016. Along with her mother, co-producer Madhu Chopra, the banner has produced several regional films including the National Award-winning Ventilator (2016). The actress, who currently appears in the US television show, Quantico, will next be seen in the Hollywood film, A Kid Like Jake (2018) which will have its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2018.
In September this year, Chopra was also a part of Variety magazine's Power of Women luncheon along with Kelly Clarkson, Octavia Spencer, Patty Jenkins and Michelle Pfeffier. The event honoured Hollywood’s most philanthropic women and their chosen charities and causes. Recognizing her extensive work for child's rights, Chopra was made the global UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador.
