The Supreme Court, in a landmark ruling, recently banned the practice of triple talaq for a period of six months by which the Centre has been asked to come out with a legislation. A Marathi film titled Halal has been based on the practice of triple talaq. The Halal teaser gives an sneakpeek into the topic which has been boldly explored in the film.

The practice allows a husband to instantly divorce his wife by simply saying the Arabic word for divorce, talaq, three times.

Directed by Shivaji Lotan Patil, the film stars Chinmay Mandlekar who plays the husband of Pritam Kagne. He divorces her through the practice of triple talaq. The story is set in the interiors of Maharashtra.

The teaser only features all three verbal calls of triple talaq by Mandlekar’s character. He doesn’t do that in the usual way of saying, ‘Talaq talaq talaq.’ But there is another character who divorces his wife by saying the word thrice. The song ‘Maula’ is continuously played in the background.

This is Patil’s second Marathi film. His first Dhag (2014) won him the National Award for Best Director. The same film also won two more National Awards for Best Actress for Usha Jadhav and Special Jury award to child actor Hansraj Jagtap. Patil made his Hindi film debut last year with 31st October (2016) which starred Vir Das and Soha Ali Khan.

Halal is all set to be released on 29 September.
