Lucknow Central song 'Teen Kabootar': Farhan Akhtar & Co. ride on wings of fantasy

With barely few musical instruments used, the Arjuna Harjai composition features mouth and body percussions.

In the age of advanced technology, it’s always refreshing to have a track that uses musical instruments to a bare minimum. The makers of Lucknow Central have released one such track, titled 'Teen Kabootar'.

While the track has a limited use of musical instruments, it features mouth and body percussions to a great extent. Music composer Arjuna Harjai has used a drum (one used to store water), plates and other objects to create the rustic rhythm. Those with keen eyes and ears will be able to gauge that.

The success of the song clearly hinged on the performance of its singers. Mohit Chauhan, Divya Kumar and rapper Raftaar don’t disappoint. Raftaar perhaps enjoys the best lyrics, a verse that is high on entertainment. Mohit Chauhan had crooned the famous 'Masakali' song from Delhi 6 (2009), which was an ode to pigeons. It seems, the pigeons bring out the best in Chauhan as he again chips in with a delightfully fluttering performance.

If Sonam Kapoor was the Masakali in Delhi 6, here Farhan Akhtar, Deepak Dobriyal, Rajesh Sharma, Gippy Grewal, and Inaamulhaq are the kabootars (pigeons), wanting to fly their way out to freedom from the Lucknow Central jail.

The lyrics by Kumaar are in sync with the film’s plot where the inmates are using the band as a means to hatch a jailbreak. The mix of Hindi and English words have been cleverly arranged in the lyrics, syncing with music and the visuals. Kumaar has essentially given wings of fantasy to the inmates.

The singers, musicians have done their job but the song clearly rides on the fluttering and flattering dance moves of Akhtar and his band members. Akhar is seldom known for his dancing skills but he seems to have discovered the child in him while pulling off this number.

Being a lead hero, Akhtar is expected to dance, but that is a trait one simply doesn’t associate with the likes of Dobriyal, Sharma, Grewal and Inaamulhaq. The gentlemen are basking in their hour of glory. Rajesh Sharma in particular is the most entertaining of the cast.

Lucknow Central will be released on 15 September.
