Deepika Padukone has showed her action moves in Bajirao Mastani (2015) and xXx: Return Of Xander Cage (2017). She’s expected to do the same in Padmavati. Post this, Padukone will be seen in a gangster film, where she will essay the character of Sapna Didi, the woman who tried to assassinate underworld don and India’s most wanted criminal Dawood Ibrahim.

The film will be helmed by Honey Trehan, who has assisted filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj in films like Omkara (2006) and Kaminey (2009). Bhardwaj will pen the script for the untitled film that will also star Irrfan Khan, who is said to be playing a local gangster.

"Trehan has been a part of my life before I made my first film. Launching him as a director after Abhishek Chaubey gives me deep joy. He will make a fine director. Deepika has been asking me to write a script for her for a long time. She has heard this script and loved it. We are in an advance stage of discussion with her,” Bhardwaj told Mumbai Mirror tabloid. This will be a maiden collaboration between Padukone and Bhardwaj.

With this film, Padukone will reunite with her Piku co-star Khan.

The films is adapted from some incidents recounted in the book Mafia Queens Of Mumbai written by Hussain Zaidi and Jane Borges.

Sapna Didi is said to have had no criminal background, but the woman took to guns as she wanted to avenge the death of her husband Mehmood Kalia, who was killed by Dawood Ibrahim. Sapna Didi had travelled to Sharjah, but Dawood got a whiff of her move, and eliminated her.

“Sapna Didi had no criminal background. She took to crime only after her husband was killed. She even became a police informer in an attempt to keep tabs on Dawood’s business. Such was her determination to take revenge,” Isaak Bagwan, former assistant commissioner of police, Central Mumbai had told TheDawn.com in 2014.

The film is expected to go on floors by the end of the year. Padukone is currently shooting for Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmavati.
