Why MS Dhoni makers scrapped its Marathi version

Did the MNS warning force the makers to scrap the Marathi version?

Neeraj Pandey’s MS Dhoni – The Untold Story is all set to release this week on 30 September. Going by the buzz and excitement, the film is expected to open positively at the box-office. Starring Sushant Singh Rajput in the lead, the film is a biopic on India’s most successful cricket team captain, Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

It will have the widest release ever for a film in India. This also includes its dubbed versions in Tamil and Telugu. But contrary to earlier announcement, MS Dhoni won’t be releasing in Marathi, although the film’s trailer in the language was released last month.

Soon after its Marathi trailer came out, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) had urged the makers to not release the Marathi version as they feared that it might hamper the chances of other Marathi films releasing alongside. Hence, there are speculations that this might have prompted the makers to shelve the Marathi version.

However, in a statement, Vijay Singh, CEO of Viacom 18 Motion Pictures, has stated that, along with Marathi, they have also scrapped its Punjabi version and it has nothing to do with the warning by MNS.

He said, “We wanted to release our film in Marathi and Punjabi too. However, given the deadline to make the widest ever release happen in the history of Indian cinema, we are not being able to get the Marathi and the Punjabi versions ready in time. This is the first time a movie is releasing so wide, so we were not able to calculate the physical time it takes to make all the dubs happen.”
