Sequels have become a regular feature in Hindi cinema over the past decade, as it has been in Hollywood for almost 40 years now. But unlike in Hollywood, a prequel remains rare in Hindi cinema. But that is about to change with Akshay Kumar’s Baby (2015) becoming one of the very few Indian films to have a prequel. The film, titled Naam Shabana, went on the floors today.

Needless to say, the film is about the back story of the Neeraj Pandey-directed Baby. But it doesn’t feature Akshay Kumar in the lead. The film revolves around the character of Taapsee Pannu and how she was selected to be a part of the Khiladi’s squad in Baby. Akshay Kumar will be seen in a cameo in the film.

Naam Shabana will not be directed by Pandey. It will be helmed by Shivam Nair who has films like Ahista Ahista (2006), Maharathi (2008) and Bhaag Johnny (2015) to his credit.

The film is being produced under the banners of Plan C Studios, Kriarj Entertainment and Cape Of Good Films.

Pannu shared the clapboard from the first day of the shoot on Twitter with the caption, “Another adventurous journey begins.... #NaamShabana my first ever title role. Get ready for some serious action.”

Akshay Kumar shared the same picture and wrote, “A unique attempt, for the very 1st time in Indian cinema.Get ready 2 be surprised, #NaamShabana coming ur way next yr.”
