Is Kabir Khan eyeing Ranveer Singh for a sports film?

Buzz has it that the Tubelight director is planning a film based on the 1983 cricket World Cup.

Amidst rumours of Kabir Khan having a trouble with Salman Khan while shooting Tubelight, the Sultan actor may not really warm up to the news that his Ek Tha Tiger and Tubelight director is eyeing a younger competitor for his next.

As per a report in DNA newspaper, Khan has been holding discussions with the Bajirao Mastani actor for a while. The proposed project is based on the Indian cricket team’s triumph at the 1983 World Cup.

It was reported in September that the film was to be directed by writer Sanjay Puran Singh Chauhan, but Kabir will now take on the job. Chauhan had directed the critically-acclaimed film Lahore (2010). There have been murmurs of Arjun Kapoor being cast for the lead role of former Indian cricket captain Kapil Dev.

A text message to Kabir regarding the sports film development went unheeded.

The Indian cricket team had created history when Dev led a team to win the 1983 World Cup, defeating the might of Clive Lloyd’s West Indies in England.   India tasted World Cup glory 28 years later when the Mahendra Singh Dhoni-led team India lifted the World Cup at home in 2011.

Early this year we saw Sushant Singh Rajput essay the titular role in the Dhoni biopic MS Dhoni: The Untold Story.

Kabir is currently filming for the Salman-starrer Tubelight. Rumours of the Kabir-Salman rift have been doing the rounds for a while with the director reportedly unhappy with the actor. That Kabir will not be directing the sequel Tiger Zinda Hai (2017), the sequel to his 2012 romantic spy thriller Ek Tha Tiger, has further added to the speculation.

Singh is currently shooting for Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Padmavati.
