He has been around for nearly two decades, having directed seven films and produced over 30, but there was one thing missing from the CV of Karan Johar the director: a film whose collections had crossed Rs100 crore.

The long wait is over now as Ae Dil Hai Mushkil has crossed the mark at the domestic box office. The romantic drama, which was released on Diwali day on 28 October, has grossed Rs102.5 crore at the domestic box office so far. It's the first film directed by Johar to achieve this.

In his 18-year career, Johar has directed seven films, starting with Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998) which had earned Rs45.25 crore. In those days, such a collection was considered a blockbuster. The closest Johar came to the Rs100 crore mark was with My Name Is Khan (2010), which bagged Rs72.75 crore domestically from its theatrical release.

Though the collections of Ae Dil Hai Mushkil have crossed Rs100 crore, the return on investment on the film isn’t great with the approximate cost of production being Rs85 crore.

As a producer, Johar has had two Rs100 crore films — Agneepath (2012), which bagged over Rs120 crore, and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (2013), which garnered Rs178 crore. In fact, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil is also lead star Ranbir Kapoor's first Rs100 crore grosser since Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani and has ended his run of four successive duds, though it is far from being a hit.

This film is also the first Rs100 crore grosser in Aishwarya Rai Bachchan's kitty and her first non-flop, so to speak, since she made her comeback last year with Jazbaa. Though Ae Dil Hai Mushkil is still miles away from being a hit, Rai Bachchan, Johar and Kapoor at least have something to cheer about, especially given the mushkil (trouble) they had in getting it released.
