If not Punjab, then how about Udta Funjab? - Alternative titles for Udta Punjab

With the censor board reportedly recommending deletion of the word Punjab from the film's title, we offer a few alternatives.

Your world may be turned upside down, but you can always ease the pain by looking at the lighter side.

Balaji Motion Pictures and Anurag Kashyap are currently fretting over the fate of their film, Udta Punjab, after reports emerged that the revising committee of the Central Board for Film Certification (CBFC), popularly known as the censor board, had recommended deletion of the word 'Punjab' from its title. Reason: the board believes the title will tarnish the image of the state of Punjab.

The CBFC’s stand followed objections raised by some members of the Shiromani Akali Dal, an ally of the Bharatiya Janata Party, which runs the central government. The Akali Dal members felt the film, with its controversial subject of rampant drug abuse in the state, would 'tarnish the image of Punjab'. More worrisome for the Akali Dal, which has been ruling Punjab for nine and a half years, is that the state goes to the polls in February next year, and it fears the film will queer the pitch for it, making an already difficult electoral battle more difficult. The film's trailer showed Shahid Kapoor’s character saying 70% of the state’s youth is falling prey to drugs.

Director Abhishek Chaubey and the producers must be scratching their heads over the title change recommendation. Worse, the board reportedly wants the filmmakers to create a fictional place and not use the name of any existing place. So we present here a few suggestions in a lighter vein, hoping the filmmakers, upset though they may be, see the humour.

1. Udta Funjab
If not Punjab, how about Funjab?  After all, aren’t Punjabis known to be fun-filled, joyous people? They love their land, they love their music, they love their Patiala peg, and they simply enjoy life to its fullest.

2. Udta Rockstan or Popstan
Indian popular music owes a lot to Punjab, with the likes of Baba Sehgal, Daler Mehndi, and Sukhbir dominating pop charts over the past two decades. With the central character in Udta Punjab being a rockstar, perhaps the filmmakers can rechristen the film Udta Rockstan or Udta Popstan.

3. Udta Kapoorabad
The film is produced by Ekta and Shobha Kapoor, with the lead roles being essayed by Shahid Kapoor and ex-flame Kareena Kapoor Khan. With Kapoor being a common surname in Punjab, and so many Kapoors associated with the film, perhaps Kapoorabad might be the fictional land the censor board wants the filmmakers to create.

4. Udta Tommy

It might be wise to avoid controversy by dragging any place into the title. So, why not bring a character name in? Shahid Kapoor plays Tommy Singh in the film. Tommy is also a very popular nickname in Punjab. So, perhaps, the film can be renamed Udta Tommy. After all, it is Tommy who is flying high in the film.

5. Udti Duniya

Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma dug his teeth into the raging issue with a sarcastic tweet of his own.

One cannot but agree with Varma. After all, drugs are a menace that plagues not just Punjab but the country and the world at large. But given that Udta India may tarnish the name of the country, perhaps it would be safer to rename the film Udti Duniya?
