Throw him any challenge on the cricket field and Mahendra Singh Dhoni isn't one to go on the back foot. However, in the reel and real world, the Indian cricket star has no control over the fate of his biopic.

For the second time, the makers of MS Dhoni: The Untold Story have altered the release date of their film. Initially, the film was supposed to release in July but it got pushed to 2 September. Now, the makers have postponed the release further to 30 September, not wanting to clash with AR Murugadoss's Akira that stars Sonkashi Sinha. Akira, which was initially supposed to release on 23 September, will now release on 2 September.

Vijay Singh, CEO of Fox Star Studios, said, "It was a unanimous decision to release the film on 30 September 2016. This would give the team more time to present the film to audiences in the best way. We in no way wanted to compromise on the visual experience that Neeraj Pandey is set to create with this movie."

The move to push the release date back makes sense. Releasing the film on 2 September would have led to competition with Akira. Moreover, a week later Dharma Productions is set to release Baar Baar Dekho starring Sidharth Malhotra and Katrina Kaif.

It is surprising that Murugadoss has advanced the release of his film by three weeks, as it was set to have a clear field on 23 September after Anand L Rai’s Manmarziyan was pushed to 2017.

Dhoni will have no competition on 30 September and Fox Star can hope to do well at the box office. Directed by Neeraj Pandey, MS Dhoni: The Untold Story stars Sushant Singh Rajput in the lead.
