This star's story began in the humble bylanes of Mumbai. Despite his stupendous success, Shroff has remained rooted to the ground, never forgetting his beginnings. He was born to a Gujarati astrologer called Kakabhai Haribhai Shroff, and a Kazakh mother. The political crisis in Kazakhstan forced Rita, her six siblings and nanny to arrive in India, but not before sleeping on makeshift beds placed on ice sheets in Ladakh. Marriage to Kakabhai was not easy either, as the senior Shroff was thrown out of his house following losses in the share market.
Jackie Shroff and his parents were devastated when their elder son drowned while trying to save another man’s life. He was just 17.
Jackie was a local toughie and was picked by Dev Anand for a little goon’s role in Swami Dada. Shroff had taken acting classes where he met Dev Anand’s son Suniel and requested him to arrange a meeting with the great actor as his mother was a big fan. After Dev Anand cast him, Subhash Ghai spotted him and cast him for the lead role in Hero. The film was a blockbuster and the rest, as they say, is history.
