Geeta Phogat's real coach, P R Sondhi was irked by the film's portrayal of his character in a negative light. In reply, Khan has suggested that it was just a 'little fiction'.

Nitesh Tiwari’s Dangal has grown in popularity since its release on the Christmas weekend. The Aamir Khan starrer has not only earned massive box-office success, earning over Rs170 crore in six days, but also critical acclaim.
However, with success came a controversy about the character of the Common Wealth Games coach, played by Girish Kulkarni. The coach, who trained Geeta Phogat, is not only shown to be egoistic and jealous in the film, but he also locks Aamir’s character in a room in one of the important scenes. He is shown constantly at loggerheads with the character of Mahavir Singh Phogat throughout the film.
This portrayal hasn’t gone down well with with Geeta’s actual coach, P R Sondhi. Sondhi was shocked and angry to learn of such a portrayal in the film. He was particularly upset with the scene where the coach locks Mahavir Singh Phogat. Although Sondhi admitted that he hasn’t seen the film and learnt about the scene from his students.
Now, Aamir has responded to Sondhi’s allegations. Without going deeper into the issue, he defended himself by suggesting the need of adding “little fiction” to biopics. Talking to an agency, he said, “In every biopic little fiction is added but essence of their story is kept intact.”
Sondhi had earlier said that he would view the film, and resort to a legal notice if needs be. So far, there hasn’t been any response from his end. It will be interesting to see whether Aamir Khan’s explanation proves satisfactory.
