Director Nitesh Tiwari’s Dangal emerged a big winner on the first weekend earning a mammoth Rs103.80 crore. It also broke the single-day record by amassing Rs40 crore on Sunday. But, like every other film, it faced a challenge yesterday, the first working day after the weekend.
However, the Aamir Khan-starrer passed the Monday test with flying colours, collecting as much as Rs24.75 crore in box-office receipts, which is impressive for a weekday.
In fact, the collection is the third highest for a Monday and highest ever for a working Monday. Dangal is now standing pretty with a total box-office collection so far of Rs129.24 crore. Considering the film's budget of Rs70 crore, its return on investment is certain to be good.
It would be possible to predict Dangal’s lifetime journey only after knowing its first-week collection. Trade pundits had predicted that the film would finish the week with around Rs185 crore. But if it continues to spring a surprise in the coming days, it could go past this projection.
The first week will also make it clear whether the film will beat Sultan’s lifetime business of Rs300 crore and become the biggest blockbuster of 2016.
Dangal is a biopic on wrestler Mahavir Singh Phogat and his efforts to make two of his daughters wrestling champions. Aamir Khan plays Phogat while Fatima Sana Shaikh and Sanya Malhotra play his daughters, Geeta and Babita.
