Nitesh Tiwari’s Dangal has emerged a winner at the box office in the first weekend itself by becoming only the sixth film to enter the Rs100 crore club in three days. The others in the list are Dhoom 3 (2013), Happy New Year (2014), Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015), Prem Ratan Dhan Payo (2015) and Sultan (2016).
After collecting Rs29 crore on Friday, which, incidentally, was a working day, and Rs34 crore on Saturday, the Aamir Khan-starrer collected a huge Rs40 crore on Sunday, taking its total to Rs103.80 crore, as per figures shared by BoxOfficeIndia.com. Thus, the film set a new record for a single day's box-office earnings.
The film was reportedly made on a budget of Rs70 crore. Since the box-office collections are already into positive territory, the point of interest now is whether it will set new box-office records. Dangal has a good chance of becoming the highest grosser of 2016 owing to the film's positive word-of-mouth publicity. The record is currently held by Salman Khan’s Sultan, which did an overall theatrical business of Rs300 crore.
Also starring Fatima Sana Shaikh and Sanya Malhotra in pivotal roles, Dangal now faces the weekday test from today. But the test is not likely to be as severe because this is the Christmas-New Year holiday period and educational institutions are shut.
