Birthday special: Govinda's classic dance moves in GIFs

Looking at the unconventional dance moves that made Govinda a hit with the masses

Mayur Lookhar

Critics still regard him as a talent wasted, but there's nothing that takes away from the phenomena that is Govinda. He carved his own path, with goofy acting and funny dance steps. A rare talent who could pull various emotions, Govinda made a name for himself in the 80s and 90s as the quintessential masala entertainer. He could make you laugh, he could reduce you to tears. As a natural dancer, contemporary dance styles weren't for Govinda to emulate. He would go on to pull off styles created only for him. And that's what made him a silver screen darling.

As the actor turned 53 today (21 December), we take a look at some dance steps that are entertaining and easy.

1. 'What is your mobile number?' [Haseena Maan Jayegi (1999)]

These were early years after the cellphone came to India in the early 1990s. It was only fitting that a song in Hindi cinema had a welcome song to capture the fascination for the communication device.

2. 'Kisi disco main jaye' [Bade Miyan Chote Miyan (1998)]

These incomprehensible dance steps and expressions leave a lot to be desired. Yet their entertainment value goes up every time this song comes on the TV screen.

3. 'I'm a street dancer' [Ilzaam (1986)]

Govinda turned into a dancing superstar with his debut film Ilzaam. Like Mithun Chakraborty, Govinda too copied Michael Jackson's trademark break dance moves and shot to fame overnight. With Chakraborty getting the Disco Dancer title, Govinda had to look to the streets to find his USP.

4. 'Husn Hai Suhana' [Coolie No.1 (1995)]

This song was a vibrant one with Govinda dancing to the desi beats.

5. 'Ankhiyon Se Goli Maare' [Film: Dulhe Raja (1998)]

Enjoy Govinda and Raveena Tandon's version of Bullet for my Valentine.
