The Bhartiya Janata Party-led Assam government has appointed Priyanka Chopra as the tourism brand ambassador of the state. Chopra, who was born in Jharkand, but has lived in many places, will promote the brand entity ‘Awesome Assam’.

The state's six-month old BJP government had gone on a celebrity hunt to promote Assam tourism. Chopra will visit Assam on December 24 and address an international tour operators' meet.

"We have signed an agreement with Priyanka and she is engaged as the brand ambassador of the state tourism. The agreement is for two years," Himanta Biswa Sarma, Assam tourism minister told Economic Times.

Sarma added that the actress wasn’t getting paid for being the brand ambassador.

"The Bollywood actress will not charge anything for the brand ambassador assignment. She will charge professional charges for the work she will do in photoshoots and television commercials," added Sarma.

The state government has grand plans to take the Awesome Assam campaign to countries like the United States, England and Japan. Other celebrities who were in the fray include cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, actor Ranbir Kapoor and actress Deepika Padukone.
