Gurinder Chadha’s Viceroy’s House looks promising: Watch trailer

Director Gurinder Chadha is known for making content-orientated films that cater to both Indian and foreign audiences. Her most celebrated works are Bend It Like Beckham (2002) and Bride And Prejudice (2004).

However, her last film, It’s A Wonderful Afterlife (2010), failed to make a mark. It seems she is all set now to tread on the right track with her upcoming flick, Viceroy’s House. At least this is the impression you get from the first trailer that just dropped. 

The film recounts the episode of Lord Mountbatten’s visit to India as the last viceroy during the end of British rule over India. From the trailer, it is learnt that it features his passion, struggle and how he was used by the British empire to fulfil its selfish motives. As the story is based during India’s independence, it also features the tragic event of Partition. 

Veteran British actor Hugh Bonneville plays Mountbatten while Gillian Anderson plays her wife, Lady Edwina Mountbatten. The love angle between Huma Qureshi and Manish Dayal’s characters also seems to be an important part of the story. Another Indian actor, Arunoday Singh, is part of the cast. 

The trailer raises your anticipation for the film. It suggests that the film is an honest portrayal of the subject. It also boasts of some pleasing visuals. There is royalty galore in the production design and the costumes. In other words, the makers have succeeded in recreating the 1947 era. 

Viceroy’s House is set to be released on 3 March 2017.
