There was a furore over the Indian sports ministry's move to name him one of the country's brand ambassadors for the Olympics. That hasn't deterred Salman Khan from lending his support to the athletes competing in the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
In a sporting gesture, the Sultan star has decided to donate Rs1.01 lakh to every Indian Olympian who represents the country at the Rio Games. Khan made this announcement via Twitter.
As a gesture of appreciation for our Olympic athletes, I will present each one with a cheque of Rs1,01,000.— Salman Khan (@BeingSalmanKhan) August 17, 2016
Khan also reminded the people that the government was working hard for the development of sports in India.
The government is very supportive of sports . Each of us can also do our bit to encourage a sports nation .— Salman Khan (@BeingSalmanKhan) August 17, 2016
So far, India has not managed to win a single medal at the Games. Writer-columnist Shobhaa De had slammed the athletes for their dismal performance, terming their efforts a waste of money. De was slammed for her comments and the gesture by Khan is likely to boost the morale of the beleaguered athletes.
Earlier, Yash Raj Films (YRF), the company that produced Sultan, had announced a cash reward of Rs10 lakh for each Indian gold-medal-winner at the Olympics. Given the current state of the Indian contingent, YRF's offer may go abegging.
